Vancouver is one of the cleanest, safest, and most diverse major cities in the world. Here's the practical stuff — climate, transit, banking, and how to settle in fast.

Climate

What to expect, season by season

Vancouver has the mildest climate of any major Canadian city. Pack layers — most days are between 6°C and 24°C across the school year.

January – May

Cool to mild, with daytime highs typically between 6°C and 18°C. Expect rain — a waterproof jacket is essential.

May – August

Warm summer days between 17°C and 24°C. Long daylight hours and outdoor weather most weekends.

Neighbourhood

Gastown — historic, central, walkable

MCC sits near the Steam Clock in Gastown, one of Vancouver's oldest and most culturally diverse neighbourhoods. You're bordered by Chinatown, steps from public transit, and a short walk to Canada Place and the waterfront.

Transportation

Vancouver's TransLink network

TransLink runs Vancouver's integrated public transit. Ecologically friendly, reliable, and affordable — students get the most out of a Compass Card.

Bus

The widest network — covers every Vancouver neighbourhood and connects to SkyTrain stations.

SkyTrain

Fast, frequent, mostly elevated rapid transit. Best way to move between downtown and surrounding cities.

SeaBus

A passenger ferry across Burrard Inlet between downtown Vancouver and the North Shore — quick and scenic.

Getting Set Up

Phone, banking, and credit

Cellular phone services

Most providers require two pieces of ID and proof of address to start a plan. Compare Telus, Rogers, Bell, and budget carriers like Public Mobile or Freedom.

Opening a bank account

  • Bring your passport and study permit
  • Proof of Canadian address (lease or letter)
  • Newcomer accounts often waive monthly fees

Debit, credit, and credit score

  • Use a debit card for daily purchases (Interac)
  • A secured credit card is the easiest way to start
  • Pay in full each month to build a strong credit score
