Where do you fit?

You have a Study Permit Approval Letter

Your study permit is approved and you are flying in to begin a longer-term program. This guide walks you through the IRCC and CBSA steps to activate your permit at the port of entry.

You are visiting short-term or already have a Study Permit

You are entering as a visitor for a short program, or you already have a valid study permit from a previous time in Canada. Your arrival is simpler — but documentation still matters.

At the Port of Entry

What happens when you land

A Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer will ask to see your travel documents, ask questions about your study plans, and confirm your eligibility to enter. Entry remains at the discretion of the CBSA officer — be honest, polite, and have your documents organized.

If you arrive by air

You will go through Primary Inspection Kiosks before meeting an officer. Have your study permit or POE letter ready alongside your passport.

If you arrive by land

The same documents are required at the land border. Travel during off-peak hours where possible to reduce wait times.
