A Brief History

Since its foundation in 1993, Metropolitan Community College has established itself as a community of learners, working in partnershipMetroColl-whiteboard picture with other institutes of higher education, agencies and organizations in providing affordable educational opportunities to students of all social backgrounds and different geographic locations. Courses are taught in a collegial atmosphere that fosters small class sizes for efficient instructor-student interaction, and different Press Releases reflect the curriculum diversity of the College.

Metropolitan Community College offers mainstream programs of study which prepares students for both career and further academic pursuit in their chosen field. One example of the mainstream program of study is the advanced paralegal diploma.

Interactive and Small-Class Sizes

Regardless of a person’s program stream, all of our courses are career-oriented and taught in interactive and small class sizes so that students are given personal attention in the class. Students also receive help with their course work and assignments. Because of Metropolitan Community College’s liberal approach to teaching, its courses are accessible to learners from all social and cultural backgrounds. Its Advisory Board ensures that students’ academic and employment needs are regularly met.

The College is truly a community of learners. The College is designated by the Private Training Institution Branch (PTIB) of the Advanced Ministry of Education, British Columbia. Metropolitan’s status as a designated institution is a testament both to its instructional integrity and quality of courses. These courses provide the skills and knowledge for employment, satisfy the needs for further education, and may transfer to other institutes of higher education (universities and university colleges alike), depending on the policy of the receiving institute.

Advisory Board

The College draws its Advisory Board, chaired by Dr C Okoye, from a cross-section of the community, including business persons, social workers, health care professionals, lawyers, educators, police, prison personnel and other appropriate persons. This combination of backgrounds in the decision-making process is important because it ensures that the satisfaction of students’ needs, regular curriculum review and quality programming rank top in the priority list of the College.

Adding to the Board’s overarching aim and its membership composition, a Program Advisory Committee (PAC) is structured for each program of study, as a sub-category of the Board. The PAC members are a mix of subject specialists, employers and representatives from the general student body. Each PAC advises the institution on curriculum improvement and delivery of the program for which it is constituted. The PAC also advises on qualifications of instructors and the adequacy of the equipment and resources used in the delivery of particular programs of study. The College consults its PAC regularly to help develop and continually update its courses, and to ensure that its programs of study reflect the changing requirements and advances in particular industries.

Why You Should Study With Us

This development is consequential for the College’s current transition to an all-embracing, inclusive curriculum, making it one of the exemplary and desirable institutions of higher education. Exemplary because the College is oriented towards the delivery of academic courses.

In terms of academic and career orientations, all of our courses are designed with laddering opportunities in mind such that students can ladder into other institutions of higher learning for further studies, depending on the receiving institution’s policy. Our courses are also prepared and taught on the basis both of contact and credit hours rather than simply the former, which is commonly associated with career training institutions.

Desirable because courses at Metropolitan Community College compare rather favourably to those at the public post-secondary sector institutions, and some courses may receive block transfer credits, again depending on the policy of the receiving higher institution of education. The College recruits faculty with qualifications similar to those teaching at the university level.
